Invited Speakers

Mr Paul Smith

Hand and Plastic Surgeon, London

Paul Smith undertook his undergraduate medical studies at Newcastle University qualifying in 1968. He then moved to the Anatomy Department in Glasgow University where he taught Anatomy for two years. During that time he came under the influence of Ian McGregor and Ian Jackson who were developing the groin flap and sought his help to establish the anatomical basis of the groin flap. He then continued his surgical training in Glasgow where he was influenced by Athol Parkes and his interest in hand surgery was stimulated.

He later transferred to London where he worked for Stewart Harrison and as microsurgery was becoming increasingly important went to Louisville to work with Robert Acland in his microsurgical laboratory and there with Acland and Kay he developed the technique of lymphatico-lymphatic anastomosis for which he was awarded first prize in the annual resident competition of the American Hand Surgery Society.

He continued his plastic surgical training at Duke University and then returned to the United Kingdom to Mount Vernon Regional Plastic Surgery Centre where he was appointed Consultant in 1982. During his tenure there he was awarded the Pulvertaft Prize of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand for work on the objective measurement of nerve recovery.

He took on an additional post as the Congenital Hand Surgeon to the Hospital for Sick Children at Great Ormond Street in 1988.

During his career he has published over 70 papers in peer reviewed journals and has written 20 invited chapters. He is the author of two text books, one with McGrouther and Burke – Principles of Hand Surgery and was asked to edit the fourth edition of Lister’s The Hand by Graham Lister.

His main interests have centred around Dupuytren’s contracture and congenital hand surgery. In the latter sphere he has treated over 200 radial club hands and undertaken over 140 pollicisations as well as looking after 8 mirror hands.
